Woodlot for Windows
Introduction
Woodlot for Windows was developed for calculating non declining even flow harvest rates over multiple rotations on woodlot licences in B.C. It is a windows based model developed for use by operational forestry professionals and technicians specializing in woodlot licence management. It's user friendly features allow for loading data from spreadsheets, approximating harvest constraints and partial cutting, interactive harvest calculation results, data summaries, on screen graphics, and report writing.
The original version of Woodlot (verion 1.0) was developed in response to results from a user survey conducted by the Ministry of Forests, Resource Tenures and Engineering Branch, in the fall of 1995. It was developed to be a user friendly, easy to understand and operate model, which combines a simple harvest rate calculation technique with the latest versions of yield models, in a Windows environment. It was designed to produce basic harvest rate calculations using forest cover and resource management information readily available to forest district staff.
Today, Woodlot (version 3) is the standard timber supply software used for small woodlands in BC. It has evolved with the input of many small woodland owners, the Federation of BC Woodlot Associations, Ministry of Forests, consultants and even educators to meet present needs.
An important feature of Woodlot is that most summary data and calculations are displayed, in an attempt to make calculations simple to conduct and easy to understand. Graphical displays assist the user to make decisions for calculating harvest rates, and to view implications of alternate harvest rates, constraints and some proposed management activities. All polygon data and most parameters are adjustable on screen. Basic timber harvesting constraints can be modeled, and users may enter, modify, and view information on screen.
Woodlot 3.226 includes the latest yield model information (as of April 2007) in BC and upgrades to help with timber supply analysis on woodlots and reporting.
Limitations
Woodlot is limited to calculating "non-declining even flow harvest rates" for areas under 2000ha and with less than 999 polygons. The only yield curves available are generated by VDYP and TIPSY for use in British Columbia, Canada.
